Amrit Hallan: Introductory Post

by Amrit on July 11, 2007

For a long time I’ve been contemplating starting a blog on disability, as I think we have none in India. There are some great disability related websites (I haven’t seen them actually) but this segment catches up with technology at a very slow pace. I would have started this blog a few years ago but had no idea what to write on it, and I’m still not sure. But then the best way of doing something is, start doing it.

My plan is to approach various people engaged in the disability sector and become contributing authors. This blog will primarily focus on issues and problems being faced by the disabled in India. We’ll also be highlighting the good things that are taking place.

A little bit about me: I’m cerebral palsied, and I have 75 per cent physical disability.  I am a former student of AADI  (previously known as the Spastics Society of Northern India). It primarily worked with spastic children but these days as far as I know it deals with all sorts of disabilities and all sorts of issues. After finishing schooling, graduation and a professional computer course these days I run my own Internet business, providing writing services to business websites.  I’m married and I have a daughter.  This basically sums up my current state of affairs.

I have been associated with disability activism but of late I have been away from the hub of activities.  Knowing that I can contribute a lot with my given skills and knowledge, this blog-cum-website is the first step.  My objective is to fill it up with as much information — usable and relevant information — as possible.  I also plan to start an online e-mail discussion group and also an online forum.  All this will happen gradually.

If you feel that you can contribute kindly get in touch at amrit@abledvoice.com; kindly be patient with the response time as I will be taking this e-mail account once-a-day.
